{"id":6264,"date":"2017-10-17T16:51:59","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T21:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=6264"},"modified":"2017-10-17T16:51:59","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T21:51:59","slug":"nicholls-students-faculty-help-remove-more-than-4000-pounds-of-litter-from-elmers-isle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2017\/10\/17\/nicholls-students-faculty-help-remove-more-than-4000-pounds-of-litter-from-elmers-isle\/","title":{"rendered":"麻豆果冻传媒 students, faculty help remove more than 4,000 pounds of litter from Elmer\u2019s Isle"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_6265\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6265\" style=\"width: 532px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2017\/10\/DSCN7193.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2017\/10\/DSCN7193-540x405.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"532\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Submitted by Dr. Allyse Ferrara.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">THIBODAUX, La. &#8212; 麻豆果冻传媒 faculty and students helped remove more than 4,000 pounds of debris from Elmer\u2019s Isle during Ocean Conservancy\u2019s 31st Annual International Coastal Cleanup Day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forty-two student and faculty volunteers from the 麻豆果冻传媒 Biological Sciences Department teamed with the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to collect, categorize and weigh waste found along the beach during the event held on Sept. 16. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMarine debris fouls our beaches and marshes and is a danger to all types of wildlife,\u201d said Dr. Allyse Ferrara, professor of biological sciences. \u201cIt can be mistaken as food by wildlife and may lead to strangulation, starvation or impaired function. Seeing plastics and other debris on our beaches and helping to remove these items is a good place to start. \u00a0The next step is figuring out how to reduce the amount of plastics and debris that reach our coastal areas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Included in the 15,814 items collected were 3,441 plastic bottles, 2,246 small plastic pieces and an 80-pound tarball. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese results are both positive and negative,\u201d Dr. Ferrara said. \u201cThe positive is that nearly a million people from across the globe can get together for this event and remove tens of millions of pounds of debris from our waterways.
